Not any old ship of course but a sister ship of the Fred Olsen fleet – Black Watch on which I had sailed round Africa and across the Indian Ocean earlier this year. Shortly after 22.00hrs Black Watch hove into view just south of the Arctic Circle and we closed at a very slow speed – not I hasten to add to ensure that we did not collide but because the water beneath the keel at this point was only 6 feet!
There is a lot of friendly rivalry between the ships in the fleet as to who is having the best time so lots of waving flags and big hands from the bridge and cheering. I think Braemar won that competition! It is always a back-of-the-neck-tingling experience as the ships sound their sirens in acknowledgement as we watched the sunset.
The first photo is of the Arctic Circle marker, which we passed at 20.00 hrs, followed by passing the Black Watch an hour later.
