Another ‘northernmost’ fact about Tromsø that our guide was anxious to point out is that Tromsø has a station but no trains. The last station is in fact in Bodø, however, Tromsø boasts some 20,000 place to have fun drinking and eating, a fact that had clearly not passed our young German damsel by since she pointed out that you can sit in a train compartment in a bar called ‘The Train’ – true since I passed it in the afternoon – and listen to recorded announcement that ‘the train to Tromsø is delayed by reindeer on the line!’
This reminds of a famous announcement on my commuter train from Kent many years ago when the train came to a halt. The Conductor eventually came on the PA system to tell us that the electric power had been switched off in order to allow the police to pursue a suspected rapist. The cry in unison from the passengers was “Switch it on and fry him!!”
