Thursday 27th June 2013 +1hr BST Tromsø Norway: The Race Away From Tromsø

I mentioned earlier that Tromsø is on an island.  During the afternoon the Nordkapp – the Hurtigruten ferry – had docked behind us.  We were docked under the Sandnessund Bridge and below the Arctic Cathedral but to leave we could not pass below this bridge without de-masting the Braemar so we had to sail round the island to a higher bridge.  As we lined up for the bridge the Nordkapp, who could pass under the Sandnessund Bridge, emerged from behind the island.  Having shot the bridge the Nordkapp then entered into a race – I’m sure it wasn’t but it made for exciting watching over a G & T in the Observatory Bar!

Eventually the Nordkapp overhauled us and then began so weave across our bows – at a very safe distance I might add – as if to say ‘get out of my way I have a schedule to meet!’.

We did however beat the Nordkapp into Honningsvåg the next day although by then and overnight she had probably made half-a-dozen other stops on her way north.
